Employee Wellbeing

People are your greatest asset – yet one look at the cases of work-related stress, depression, anxiety and absence reveals that when it comes to nurturing employee wellbeing, we have a big problem.

In 2019-20, HSE reported that 602,000 workers suffered from work-related stress, depression or anxiety, resulting in 12.8 million lost working days. Then, in 2020, Covid-19 hit and people everywhere, furloughed or working from home, began to talk openly about how the old normal is no longer what they want. People have been clear that they want more from life, and from their employers – and the good news is that this is good for business too.

The old school, “A” type personality perspective is that productivity and results come about from slogging it out, gritting your teeth and pushing through the exhaustion. While there are many who still believe this, we firmly believe in the power of rest, in the necessity of play, in the non-negotiability of white space and down time. You want the best from your people? You might need to rethink your whole approach to their wellbeing as a core tenet of your business strategy.

We practice what we preach here at The Work Psychologists. We are all juggling incredibly full on lives and we know that first and foremost, we are human beings, not human doings.

We bring this perspective into the consultancy and development work we do with organisations around employee wellbeing. This is not just a box to tick; it’s a revolution in how you think about your entire contracting with the people you hire.
